Among his list of accomplishments: He is the author of The Indiana Family Report, a detailed statistical analysis of the state of the family in Indiana. He was appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2006 to serve on the Governor’s Commission for a Drug Free Indiana. McCann regularly stands for faith, family and freedom at the Indiana Statehouse and with concerned citizens at the local level when marriage, family, life or religious liberty are in jeopardy.

McCann has led coalitions to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman within Indiana's Constitution, assisted in the passage of numerous pieces of legislation to protect women and children from the abortion industry, led the successful lobbying efforts to protect the religious liberty of Hoosier students and, perhaps most notably, led the diverse coalition which successfully advocated for Indiana to join 30 other states, and the federal government, in elevating free speech, religious freedom and freedom of association for all Hoosiers through the Hobby Lobby Bill (commonly referred to as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act). He has also testified against numerous attacks against free speech and religious freedom at the local level throughout Indiana.

McCann serves as the Executive Director of Indiana Family Action and Indiana Family Action PAC. IFA is the advocacy arm of the Indiana Family Institute.
