What HLS Learned About Indiana Education
The Hoosier Leadership Series’ July class focused on the many facets of Indiana education, ranging from K-12 and higher education to homeschooling and innovative workforce development.
We kicked off the day with former Representative Cindy Noe, who took us on a journey through the history of education in Indiana and how it has evolved over the years. Former Senator John Crane challenged us to think about the role education plays in preserving our nation’s founding principles and preparing future generations of engaged citizens. Jim Bopp, JD, shared his perspective as an Indiana University Trustee, offering insights into the opportunities and challenges facing higher education today regarding freedom of speech.
We also heard from Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner, who discussed the state’s vision for improving student achievement and expanding educational opportunities. The day concluded with Kylene Varner, who provided an informative look at home education and the growing impact of school choice across Indiana.
One of the highlights of the day was touring Vertical Immersive’s brand-new campus. Participants learned how this innovative, Christ-centered, two-year college alternative is reimagining higher education by combining spiritual discipleship, paid hands-on apprenticeships, and practical workforce training in areas like business, technology, and media.
From insightful discussions with experienced policymakers to exploring innovative educational models, Education Day challenged participants to think critically about the future of education and left everyone inspired by the many ways Indiana is investing in its students, families, and workforce.
